HIVE SIZES We offer three 'full-size' horizontal Top Bar Hives: A 3' hive (x25 bars), a 3' 6" hive (x30 bars) and a 4' hive (x35 bars). From our experience - for most colonies - a 3' hive is more than adequate. If you are starting out at beekeeping - we would advise the 3' economy version - as it costs less and is easy to manage. Our 3' economy version gives you a 'ready to go hive' for under £100. Occassionaly - very strong colonies - or very good honey-flows - or over-zealous spring feeding, can lead to a colony out-growing a 3' hive. When this does occur splitting - or artificial swarms can be used. If this is a concern to you - the 3' 6" hive may be a good choice as it provides space for a strong colony to expand. The 3' 6" hive is also large enough for two nuc's to be run from one hive. The 4' hive is large enough to allow three nucleus colonies
We also supply a Top Bar Nuc hive (x10 bars). This
ENTRANCES Our horizontal Top Bar Hives are designed with a series of 1" diameter entrance holes. This is to enable the beekeeper to vary access to the hive with great ease as the colony develops throughout the season. Standard corks are used to open and close the hive entrances. We also provide entrance holes at the long and short sides of the hive - giving the beekeeper the freedom to position the hive and to run the hive as required.
